PBA pitcher sets records

By Jocelyn Martinez

All serious athletes know the adage “practice makes perfect.” Dedication, hard work and persistence will always help in the long run — just as they have for Palm Beach Atlantic University’s senior softball pitcher, Ashley Jones.

Jones’ outstanding accomplishments have been recognized and honored not only this season, but also many times over the past four years.

“It is awesome to see her hard work paying off,” Head Coach Kimmy Bloemers said. “She deserves every single award and positive recognition.”

Although PBA is relatively new to  NCAA Division II, Jones was recognized as a National Player of the Week for the week of Feb. 22-28. The award was a first for PBA athletes.

Beacon Features: They are their brothers’ keepers

By Jocelyn Martinez

A private university with a fraternity? This is something Palm Beach Atlantic University was not expecting.

Thanks to a group of young men on campus, PBA can now say it now has a fraternity.

The fraternity, Nu Delta Nu, first tried out its wings at the end of last year, but because of lack of commitment and lots of paper work during finals week, the fraternity did not make it. However, this past semester, things changed.

The fraternity was born and made history as the first fraternity at PBA.

“This is an exciting time because NDN is an open book with a very bright future ahead of us,” said Clint Longenecker, member of NDN. “We are very young, having just started at the tail end of last semester but the future looks very promising. We have compiled a great group of guys and will be adding to that stellar cast throughout the semester. We’ll provide the campus and university community with a much needed shot in the arm.

After years of planning and working on the City Commons area of the West Palm Beach Waterfront, a lot of hard work is about to pay off.

“This project has been part of Mayor Frankel’s vision for downtown as a whole since she came into office in 2003,” said Peter Robbins, public information officer for the City of West Palm Beach.

Now all that is left is to get the project completed. The area should be finished by Feb. 20.

Beacon Features: Full-time student, part-time cop

By Christopher Hernandez
Contributing Writer

At first glance, Wendy Martinez may look like just an average college student, but this former police officer has seen in real life what her classmates only see in gory cop shows.

Her first call as a police officer came in as a reported suicide. As Martinez interviewed witnesses, she realized she had stumbled onto a domestic dispute turned deadly. When the victim’s boyfriend found out she was cheating, he stabbed her in the face 36 times.

“It was just the whole rush of the crime scene: people writing down the accounts and taping off the area,” Martinez said.

Now she’s put that rush somewhat behind her, becoming just a reserve police officer and studying pre-law. She hopes to become a criminal defense attorney, and she heads toward that goal with a perspective born out of personal trauma.

“I grew up with the cops around all the time because of my parents,” said Martinez, whose father was abusive. “It’s hard to see the kids in domestic disturbance calls because I knew what they were going through. I can see it in their eyes.”

Beacon News: Job search tough for international students

By Jocelyn Martinez
Contributing Writer

Palm Beach Atlantic University has a total of 104 international students enrolled this fall, of which 20 to 25 percent work on-campus jobs. Several of our international students are athletes who receive support through athletic scholarships.

However, many international students have had difficulty finding sources of income due to tough government regulation.

According to regulations from the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services, international students may work up to 20 hours a week while school is in session and up to 40 hours a week during breaks.

PBA’s Swick co-chairs Math Conference

By Jocelyn Martinez, Contributor

Palm Beach Atlantic’s Mathematic Society had a weekend that was different beyond any other typical weekend. They pulled out their calculators and sharpened their pencils for an event that was one of a kind. Math teachers from all over Florida and even out-of-state all gathered in West Palm Beach for the 57th Annual Math Conference.

Teachers began to show up at the Okeechobee Marriott Wednesday night, Sept. 30. The Hyatt and Marriott hotels reserved rooms in which the teachers who flocked to the area were able to stay.

Held at the Palm Beach Convention Center, the conference took up almost all of the available rooms between the two hotels. The General Co-Chair of the event, Jim Swick, is a professor in the Department of Arts & Sciences at PBA.
