PBA professor talks ‘Danny Gospel’

David Athey’s students at Palm Beach Altantic University have more than one reaon to listen when he talks about writing.  Athey is not only a professor, but also a published novelist.

An English and creative writing professor, Athey wrote the novel “Danny Gospel,” the story of a young man searching for romance and heavenly glory no matter what he most endure.

The inspiration for the novel came from an interesting man Athey encountered.

“I met a man who believed that mosquitoes could be used by God to help him fulfill a mission,” Athey said. “I knew that was unique enough to propel a story.”

Sailfish baseball beats Sharks 8-0

The Palm Beach Atlantic University baseball team easily handled Nova Southeastern University Wednesday night, beating the Sharks 8-0.

Sophomore pitcher Logan Thomas provided a dominant pitching performance to lead the Sailfish to their ninth win of the season.

Thomas pitched a strong seven innings, striking out four batters and not allowing a single run or walking any batters.

Coming into Wednesday night’s match up with the Sailfish, the Sharks were riding a six game winning streak. Continue reading

Opinion: Tebow can succeed in NFL

With the NFL draft approaching, there is one topic that just won’t seem to go away and that is Tim Tebow.

Everything about the guy is captivating in some way, whether you love him or hate him. Besides his highly criticized public life and outspoken Christian faith, there are many question marks surrounding his NFL future. Which team will draft him? Which round will he go in? Will he be a quarterback? How good will he be in the pros?

I’ve never seen anything like it. There are numerous NFL prospects that deserve just as much or more attention than Tebow, but the bottom line is he creates controversy.

And with people on both sides of the fence on all the issues surrounding him, there is a lot to talk about before the draft. Continue reading

SIFE seeks to help migrant farmworkers

Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) at Palm Beach Atlantic University has teamed up with the Farmworker Coordinating Council (FWCC) to help migrant workers with their finances.

They plan to assist a few migrant workers in starting and maintaining their own businesses.

The Farmworker Coordinating Council, a non-profit organization, began in 1978 to assist farm workers caught without jobs during an especially difficult winter. Today it is a social services agency addressing the barriers to basic needs faced by farmers in Palm Beach County.

The council serves over 30,000 migrant farm workers and their families in the community. FWCC’s mission is to promote self-sufficiency and improve the quality of life of migrant and seasonal farm workers through education, advocacy and access to services.

Beacon News: American Free Enterprise honored on Nov. 10

Palm Beach Atlantic University will host the 24th annual American Free Enterprise Day on Nov. 10 at 11 a.m.

PBA has sponsored the event since 1984 to honor individuals whose hard work and achievement exemplify the best of the American free enterprise system and exemplify the system’s ideals.

“The celebration of free enterprise is an esteemed tradition at the university and distinguishes it among its peers,” said PBA President Lu Hardin. “The university’s founders were convinced that America’s growth was fueled by enterprising men and women who not only created economic security for their families but were compelled to provide financial support for needy causes.”

This year four business leaders — Larry Alexander, Regina Bedoya, David Hernandez and Michael Mikkelson — will be honored.

The late John D. MacArthur, a philanthropist who donated to many causes throughout his life, will also be recognized.

Beacon Sports: Carter to coach Sailfish baseball

Hall of Fame catcher Gary Carter is the new coach of the baseball team at Palm Beach Atlantic University.

The announcment was made by PBA President Lu Hardin and Athletic Director Bob White on Tuesday at a press conference in the Greene Complex.

Carter began his career in 1974 with the Montreal Expos and played there for ten years before becoming a member of the New York Mets, where he was a member of the 1986 World Series winning team.
